Ivy Conrado-Saebens, Hudson, Colo., 16.58, $1,000 First-ever Semi-Finals complete at Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo by Susan Kanode for the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo FORT WORTH, Texas (Feb. 7, 2020) – It’s taken 15 rodeo performances, countless runs and rides to be among the first qualifiers for the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo ProRodeo Tournament Championship Finals. Action all started in the new Dickies Arena on Jan. 24 with the first of seven brackets. The top four money winners in each event advanced from the brackets to the Semi-Finals or the Wild Card Round, which was held on Wednesday, Feb. 6. That set the field for two Semi-Finals Rounds. The top four in the first semi-final claimed their spot in Saturday night’s final round. Cole Reiner of Kaycee, Wyoming and Wyatt Bloom of Belgrade, Montana each scored 87 points, tied for first place in the bareback riding and won $3,500. Both these men have come through the ranks of high school and college rodeo. Reiner, a standout at Casper (Wyoming) College, rode Witless Margie from the Calgary Stampede bucking horse string. Bloom, originally from Oregon, went to Montana State University and fulfilled a promise to his grandfather that he would get his bachelor’s degree before becoming a full-time bareback rider. He rode Championship Pro Rodeo’s Lizard Back. Also advancing in the bareback riding were Tim O’Connell of Zwingle, Iowa and Jesse Pope, from Marshall, Missouri, who each won $1,500 for their 86-point rides. In the steer wrestling Matt Reeves from Cross Plains, Texas, had the fast time of the night. Reeves, a seven-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier, earned $4,000. He won the title in the historic Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum in 2016 and showed livestock here as a youth. Reeves will be joined in the finals by world champions Hunter Cure from Holliday, Texas, and Ty Erickson from Helena, Mont., along with South Dakotan Jace Melvin. There were some empty loops in breakaway roping as contestants were going for broke. The fast time was Montanan-turned-Texan Cadee Williams who stopped the clock in 2.5 seconds. Jordan Jo Fabrizio from Canyon, Texas made history when she won the title at Cheyenne Frontier Days last July. She finished second on Thursday. Rounding out the field is Martha Angelone from Aledo, Texas, and Tanegai Zilverberg from Holabird, S.D. Two members of the famed saddle bronc riding Wright family advanced, but the crowd cheered loudest for Erath County, Texas, native Sterling Crawley. Crawley rode Calgary Stampede’s Arriving Kamloops for 87 points and the semi-finals win. If he does that again Saturday night, he will have back-to-back titles at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo. Ryder Wright and his uncle Jesse Wright, from Milford, Utah, and Allen Boore from Axtell, Utah also advanced. The reigning National High School Rodeo Association tie-down roping champion had the time to beat in the semis. Shad Mayfield of Clovis, New Mexico roped and tied his calf in 8.4 seconds and is on track to win his first Fort Worth title. Ryle Smith, the 2016 FWSSR champion tie-down roper from Oakdale, California, along with Cory Solomon of Prairie View, Texas, and Matt Shiozawa, from Chubbock, Idaho are moving on. Shiozawa won here in 2011. The barrel racing offered slim margins as the four qualifiers were just over one-tenth of a second apart. Springer, Oklahoma’s Ivy Hurst, who won the Wildcard Round on Wednesday, stopped the clock in 16.47 seconds to win the semi-final. Right behind her was Montgomery, Texas resident Ashley Castleberry with a 16.48. The 2018 rookie of the year, Jimmie Smith, of McDade, Texas, had a 16.49. The final barrel racer to qualify was Ivy Conrado-Saebens from Hudson, Colorado, the 2016 champion here, with a 16.58. Three bull riders made it to the eight second mark. At the top of the list was Ky Hamilton, from Mackay, Australia with an 89-point ride on Stock Yards Pro Rodeo’s Soy El Feugo. He earned $4,333. Brady Portenier, from Caldwell, Idaho finished second and Tanner Justin Willis, of Kearny, Arizona was third. The fourth contestant will not be determined until after Semi-Final B is completed. Semi-Final B will showcase eight more contestants in each event competing on Friday night beginning at 7:30. Once again, the top four will advance to Saturday night’s Championship Finals. ___ FORT WORTH. --- The following are unofficial results from Semi-Final A of the FWSSR ProRodeo Tournament at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo, Thursday, February 6, 2020. Moore is likely the happiest rodeo contestant at the 2020 Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo (FWSSR). The 23-year-old from Alvin, Texas rode both bulls in bracket 4 and holds the distinction of being the high money winner at the rodeo so far this year with $5,720. The lion’s share of that came in the first round when he was the lone rider to last eight seconds. He earned $4,400 for that ride. Moore came back on Thursday night to ride his second bull. This time, he was one of four to get a score and finished in second place with an 84-point effort on Dakota Rodeo’s Dixie Highway. He added $1,320 and now is making plans to ride during the semi-finals at the 2020 FWSSR ProRodeo Tournament. This is the second time that he has ridden bulls in Fort Worth. In 2019 he was one of the last to compete in the historic Will Rogers Coliseum where he finished second at the rodeo. This year, he is hoping for that first-place finish in the new Dickies Arena. “It’s really awesome to have been able to ride in both buildings,” Moore said. “Last year was special because of the history of that building. This year, being the first in this arena is cool too. I’m feeling really blessed.” Moore’s family is involved in agriculture raising cattle and hay. When he expressed interest in rodeo, he started riding sheep. When that went well, his dad bought him several sheep to practice on. He graduated to calves, then steers, and would come home from school and practice. Each stage of his career has followed that game plan and now he is ranked third in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world championship standings. A win here could see him moving to the top. Hailey Kinsel may have a new last name after marrying Professional Bull Rider Jess Lockwood, but little else has changed for the world champion barrel racer. Kinsel won the title in the Will Rogers last year and is looking to win again in the Dickies Arena. Riding her great mare, Sister, the Cotulla, Texas, resident stopped the clock in 16.37 seconds on Thursday, the fastest run of the rodeo so far. Lockwood finished second on Wednesday. She and Carly Taylor, from Andersonville, Tennessee, flipped positions and were one-two in both rounds of the bracket. They each are headed to the semi-finals with $3,080 in earnings. Jordan Jo Fabrizio from Canyon, Texas, made history last July when she was the first champion breakaway roper at Cheyenne Frontier Days in Wyoming. Wearing the buckle that she won there, Fabrizio is tied for the lead in breakaway roping in bracket 4. She and Amber Crawford from Springtown each will enter the semi-finals with $2,640. If Fabrizio continues, she will add her name to the record books here. Breakaway roping is a new event for the rodeo in 2020. “When we roped in Cheyenne for the first time, it was surreal,” she said. “Then coming here it’s that same feeling again. When I rode into the arena for the first time and saw the lights it was incredible. I am so very thankful to have these kinds of opportunities.” Bracket five of seven starts on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. with a new set of contestants in all eight events. Taylor continues January winning streak at Fort Worth by Susan Kanode for the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo FORT WORTH, Texas (Jan. 29, 2020) – The excitement at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo (FWSSR) continues to build with each bracket in the new FWSSR ProRodeo Tournament. Bracket four of seven got underway on Wednesday night with several contestants building on momentum from rodeos already held this season. Carly Taylor from Andersonville, Tennessee, won the barrel racing last Sunday at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado, riding her great mare Diva Dinero. Her success in the winter building rodeos held in conjunction with stock shows continued in the new Dickies Arena when she won the first round of the bracket with 16.54 seconds. That added $1,760 to her checking account and set her up for a qualification to the tournament’s semifinals. She will compete again on Thursday night and that will determine her next competition. Jace Melvin calls South Dakota home as that is where his family ranch is and where he learned the cowboy skills that now make him a successful rodeo contestant. Melvin moved to Texas to attend Tarleton State University. He was part of the rodeo team there and got his bachelor’s degree. He also decided he liked Texas enough to make a second home there. Melvin, who competes in the steer wrestling and lives at Morgan Mill, stopped the clock in 4.4 seconds, good enough for first place. He finished 24th in the 2019 standings and is hoping to be among the top 15 who qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) this year. This season has been his best since joining the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association in 2015. Prior to Fort Worth’s rodeo, he was ranked sixth. If he keeps it up through September, he will be headed to his first NFR. But first he has his eye on the traditional championship buckle that is given to the champions at Fort Worth. There is a famous bareback rider from Kaycee, Wyoming, that became a household name with a successful career in music – Chris LeDoux. Cole Reiner is hoping to continue the legacy from the western Wyoming town in the rodeo arena. Reiner made an 87-point ride on Andrews Rodeo’s Gypsy Rose to win the bareback riding. The 2019 Rookie of the Year earned $1,760 for his ride and is a favorite to advance to the semifinals. He is currently 10th in the world standings. The second round of Bracket 4 will start at 7:30 on Thursday night where the contestants who advance to the semifinals and wildcard will be determined. Foss, a four-time qualifier for the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) from Terrebonne, Oregon, won Monday’s round of bareback riding with an 88-point ride, then came back Tuesday to score 86.5 points on Andrews Rodeo’s horse Rylee’s Raisin Cane. That earned him a total of $3,520 and a berth in one of two semifinals February 6 and 7. Wright, the former world champion saddle bronc rider from Milford, Utah, was even more consistent – recording a score of 89 points to win Monday’s round and following that up with an 88-point ride on Andrews Rodeo’s Cat Walk to take first on Tuesday. He moves to the semifinals with $3,520 in total winnings. Two-time world champion barrel racer Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi of Lampasas, Texas, boosted her lead in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) standings by winning both rounds of barrel racing. Johna Craven FORT WORTH, Texas (Jan. 24, 2020)—Maverick Potter, a 19-year-old bull rider from Waxahatchie, is catching attention after winning the first two rounds of bull riding at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo’s (FWSSR) ProRodeo Tournament Potter was one of only two cowboys to stay on for the full eight seconds during Friday night’s opening round. He only scored 78 points on Rafter G Rodeo’s bull named Frosty, but that was the highest mark of the night and earned him $2,420. Idaho’s Ruger Piva, who narrowly missed qualifying for his first National Finals Rodeo (NFR) last month, made the other qualified ride and earned $1,980. The new tournament format debuted at Fort Worth this year when the rodeo moved from historic Will Rogers Coliseum to the new Dickies Arena. Fifty-six of the top rodeo athletes in North America compete in each of eight events for more than $1.2 million dollars prize money. Seven groups of eight athletes will compete in consecutive rodeo performances in each event. The top two money winners from each group qualify for one of two semifinal rounds. The third-highest money winner in each set qualifies for the wild card round. The other four competitors go into a non-qualifiers pool and the highest remaining money winner in each event also gets to move to the wild card round. The winner of that second-chance round moves on to the semifinals as well. Then, the top four from each semifinal move on to the finals on Saturday, February 8 when the champions will be crowned. After the first round, Potter knew he had a good chance to make the semifinals, but he didn’t take anything for granted. “That just made me want to do better,” Potter said. “I’m always trying to get better.” And he did just that. On Saturday afternoon Piva was the first cowboy out, scoring 82.5 points on Pickett Pro Rodeo’s bull Dark Thoughts. Potter was next and scored 87.5 points on another Pickett bull, Southern Style. Again they were the only two riders to make qualified rides. “One of my traveling partners Parker McCown had drawn that bull at Waco,” Potter said, “so I knew a little bit about him. The young bull rider left Fort Worth immediately following his winning ride to try to make the trip to West Monroe, Louisiana, for a rodeo performance Saturday night. “That’s a blessing,” he said, upon learning he had earned $4,840 and was guaranteed a spot in the semifinals February 6 and 7. Potter is just getting started in professional rodeo. His biggest win to date was first place at the PRCA Extreme Bulls event in Castle Rock, Wyoming, last summer. He also won the bull riding championship at the International Finals Youth Rodeo last July. A pair of barrel racers earned semifinals berths by dominating first two rounds. Amanda Harris of Spearfish, S.D., won the first round and finished second in the second round. Not to be outdone, Cheyenne Allan of Mabton, Washington, who placed second in the first round, came back to win the Saturday afternoon round with the fastest time thus far – 16.55 seconds. Both women earned just under $3,100. A new set of competitors compete Saturday night and Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. FORT WORTH. --- The following are unofficial results from the FWSSR ProRodeo Tournament at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo, Saturday, January 24, 2020.
